Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Wakefield Chief of Police Steven Skory have confirmed that Shemar Nelms, 18 of Norwood, has been arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license and possession of a large capacity firearm in connection with allegedly shooting a 21-year-old female on September 22, 2020 in Wakefield.

Nelms was arrested last night without incident at his mother’s residence in Norwood and will be arraigned today in Malden District Court.

At approximately 3:39 a.m. on September 22, 2020, Wakefield Police responded to the Everly Apartments complex parking garage located on Audubon Road for a report of a victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim, a 21-year-old female, was located in the driver’s seat of a Honda CRV with a gunshot wound to her neck area. The victim was transported to an area hospital at the time and remains hospitalized at a rehabilitation center. As a result of the subsequent investigation into this matter, police were able to determine through a review of the evidence including video surveillance that Nelms allegedly shot the victim before fleeing the scene.

Two juveniles have also been charged in connection with this case, a 17-year-old male juvenile from Wakefield and a 16-year-old male from Lynn. The 17-year-old has been charged with possession of a firearm without an FID Card, possession of ammunition without an FID Card, receiving a firearm with a defaced serial number and possession of a large capacity feeding device. The 16-year-old has been charged with carrying a firearm without a license and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

The juveniles were arraigned on September 24, 2020. Juvenile proceedings are closed to the public.

This case was investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police assigned to that office, Wakefield Police, the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and Norwood Police. The prosecutor assigned to this case is Jacob McCrindle.
