Lieutenant Steven Skory Named Next Wakefield Police Chief

Lt. Skory

The Wakefield Police Department is pleased to announce that Lt. Steven Skory will assume the role of police chief upon Chief Richard Smith’s retirement at the end of May 2019. The Town Council voted unanimously to ratify the elevation of Lt. Skory on March 25, 2019.

Lieutenant Skory began his career in law enforcement in 1994 and joined the Wakefield Police Department in 2000. In 2014, he graduated from the 258th session of the FBI National Academy. Skory serves on the Wakefield Police Honor Guard, is the incident commander and security planner for Wakefield’s Independence Day parade, manages the Town’s special units, and has served as the chairperson of the Traffic Advisory Committee for the last 10 years.

In addition to his responsibilities within the town of Wakefield, Lieutenant Skory is a member of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC), which coordinates resource sharing in member communities. Serving on its Incident Management Team, Skory acted as the NEMLEC liaison to the Boston Police Department following the 2013 bombings at the Boston Marathon and has aided the cities of Newton, Salem, Boston, and Lawrence in various emergency-response and event-based capacities.

“For the last 19 years I have enjoyed coming to work every day, and the opportunity to serve as the chief of the Wakefield Police Department is an honor,” Skory remarked. “It’s a great feeling to have achieved my goal, but extra special to be a part of such a great organization and to serve such a great community.”
