George Floyd

The killing of George Floyd at the hands of those in our profession has shaken the Wakefield Police Department to its core.  The disregard shown for Mr. Floyd’s life was shocking to everyone and does not represent the values of Wakefield Police Officers.  Our Officers are well trained and the tactics used on Mr. Floyd are not part of any training program in Wakefield or anywhere else in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  Officers are trained to only use the amount of force necessary to protect themselves and others from harm.  We assume responsibility for the care and well-being of those who have been taken into custody.

The Wakefield Police Department thoroughly embraces the six pillars of 21st century policing and remains committed to professional conduct, unbiased policing, and procedural justice for all people.  As Police Officers, we are guardians of the community and above all else, we value human life.  It is our duty to protect and serve our community with an unbiased approach.  We will work tirelessly to earn and keep the trust of our citizens.  It is in our inherent values to treat all people with fairness, respect, and dignity.  Your police department prides itself on care and compassion for all.

We realize there is much healing that must take place and as always we will work with our community to restore the trust that has been damaged as a result of this horrific incident.
