"Coffee with a Cop" Event Friday

WAKEFIELD -- Chief Rick Smith announces that the Wakefield Police Department will host a “Coffee with a Cop” event this week, and all are welcome to come and enjoy free coffee while getting to know their local police officers.

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 6, 2017 from 8:30-10 a.m.

WHERE: Brothers Restaurant, 404 Main St., Wakefield

Members of the Wakefield Police Department will be on-hand to greet, share a cup of "joe" and engage with residents, business owners, and visitors. Officers are available for open general discussion with members of the public.

Coffee, of course, is provided free of charge, and community members are invited to get to know their police officers face-to-face.

"The Wakefield Police Department is a dedicated, well-trained group of professionals, and I think events like Coffee with a Cop and programs like Community Policing help officers and their communities get to know each other better," Chief Smith said. "We are moms and dads, coaches, and coffee drinkers just like you, and I encourage everyone to come out on Friday."

The event is part of National Community Policing Week. The Wakefield Police Department is very dedicated to the concepts of community policing, building public trust, and police legitimacy and is proud to host events like this.

Coffee With a Cop began in Hawthorne, Calif. in 2011 as a result of police officers brainstorming ways to better interact with their community. They developed a simple plan to break down the barriers that have been built between police officers and citizens — have a cup of coffee, discuss what’s on your mind, ask questions and make suggestions that could better the community.

Since its creation, Coffee With a Cop events have been held in more than 2,000 communities in 49 states. It is regarded as one of the most successful community oriented policing programs in the United States.
