Code Red Emergency Notification System

The Town of Wakefield has implemented the CodeRED Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. The CodeRED system gives us the ability to deliver pre-recorded emergency telephone notification and/or information messages to targeted areas or the entire town. The system will only be used for emergency purposes.

The CodeRED system is a geographical based notification system, which means street addresses are needed to select which phone numbers will receive emergency notification calls in any given situation. The system works fine for cell phones too, but a street address is required. People who have recently moved but kept the same phone number also need to change their address in the database.

This system is only as good as the telephone database supporting it. If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called. No one should assume his or her phone number is in the system. All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the last year and who use a cell phone or VOIP as their primary home phone.

Examples of when the CodeRED system may be utilized include:

  • Drinking water contamination
  • Missing children
  • Fires or floods
  • Utility outages
  • Chemical spills, or gas leaks
  • Evacuation notice and routes
  • Bomb threat
  • and other emergency incidents where rapid and accurate notification is essential for life safety

Residents and businesses without internet access are encouraged to contact a friend or family member for help registering. You can also call the Wakefield Fire Department at 781-246-6435 if you need assistance registering. For residential listings please provide your full name, physical address (no PO boxes), primary phone number and a possible secondary phone number when registering.
