WAKEFIELD - William R. Connors, 81, retired Chief of Police for the Town of Wakefield, died Tuesday, Jan. 22. Born in Somerville on May 6, 1926 he was the son of the late Richard and Mary (Hederson) Connors.
Chief Connors was a graduate of Everett High School and later attended Boston University and the University of Massachusetts. He later graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy and the FBI Academy of Washington, D.C.
Chief Connors' service to the town spanned 40 years with the Police Department, 20 of which he spent as chief of the department. In addition, he was a teacher at the State Police Academy and also taught scuba diving. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife Margaret M. (Sullivan) Connors, three daughters, Kathleen M. French of Litchfield, N.H., Marie T. Galise of Stoneham and Linda D. Alleca of Derry, N.H. and two sons, Richard M. Connors of Wakefield and William R. Connors Jr. of New Boston, N.H. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Donald Jr. Sean, Gina, Kyla, Kevin, Kelli and Ryan.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Monday at 9 a.m. to be followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St. Wakefield at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden with military honors.
